Senior Volleyball Champions

1st Kilrea Company has won the annual Coleraine and District Battalion Volleyball Competition. The event took place at St Patrick's Church Halls in Coleraine and was attended by Companies from throughout the North Coast. The Seniors final came down to 2nd Coleraine and 1st Kilrea.

The standard of play was high and resulted in many close fought fixtures. The initial stages of the competition were played in two leagues of five teams with the top two qualifying to the semi-final knockout stage.

Thanks to all those who helped organise the event and congratulations to all the competitors.

Members of 1st Kilrea Company will be heading to Crawfordsburn, County Down for a Northern Ireland Inter-Company Camp to mark the 121st anniversary of the Boys' Brigade in Ireland. Activities will include orienteering, canoeing, raft building, golf, sports, climbing, abseiling, caving, zorb balling and Go-Karting.

Arrangements

Boys attending camp should meet at 1st Kilrea Presbyterian (Church Street Entrance) on Tuesday 30th June at 10.00am. We expect to arrive back in Kilrea at about 6.00pm on Saturday 4th July.

1st Kilrea at the 125 Anniversary Tattoo

The 1st Kilrea Company Band took part in the 125th Anniversary Tattoo in Glasgow. The boys and officers have been working together throughout the 2008-09 session. Video and pictures will be uploaded when available. The band took part in the Fife and Drum Band and the Massed Bands Fanale. A represntative of 1st Kilrea also took part in the Parade of Company Colours.

125 Anniversary Tattoo

1st Kilrea Company Band has been given the unique opportunity and previlege of taking part in the Boys' Brigade 125th Anniversar Tattoo at the Breahead Arena in Glasgow, Scotland on Saturday 25 April 2009. First Kilrea will be the only company from Northern Irleand taking part - with some from England and a majority of partisipants from Scotland. We have the oppertunity to take part in teh Fife and Drum Band, the Massed Bands Fanale and the Parade of Company Colours.

Agenda
On Friday 24th we will leave Kilrea at 3.30pm in order to get to Larne for the Larne-Troon sailing a 5.30pm a packed lunch will be required for the journey.

We will be hosted by 8th Paisey Company during the weekend. There will be an activity on the Friday night and most of Saturday will be spend in rehearsals for the Tattoo a the Arena and a local school. Meals will be provided by the organisers.

We will attend church on the Sunday morning where we have been invited to play during the service. After lunch we will begin our journey back to Kilrea - time to be confirmed.

What to bring
Full uniform (including badges and well polished shoes), flute and music sheets, sleeping bag, pajamas, washing kit and towel, a change of clothes and waterproof coat. It is important that luggage is kept to a minimum space will be scarce in the bus as we will be taking two drums and the Company Colour with us.

Beating Retreat 2008

First Kilrea Company Band took part in the Beating the Retreat at Edinburgh Casltle, Scotland. The event was organised by the Edinburgh, Leith & District Battalion takes place each May. The event included music from the Pipes & Drums, Fife & Drums, Bugles & Drums and Brass Bands.

2009 - Crawfordsburn Country Park, Bangor

The 2009 we will be taking part in the Northern Ireland District Camp at Crawfordsburn Country Park on the southern shores of Belfast Lough. There is an excellent infrastructure for the size of camp we anticipate with a wide range of activities available on-site or near-by.

2008 - Strathclyde Country Park, Glasgow

In 2008 we again visited Strathclyde Country Park outside Glasgow, this time we brought other Coleraine Battalion companies along with us. This time we also spent the day in Edinburgh visiting the historic castle and slightly more modern Scottish Parliament building at Holyrood.

2007 - Derganagh House, Ballycastle

In 2007 our company camp was in Ballycastle on Northern Ireland's North Coast. We stayed at Derganagh House on the grounds of Ballycastle High. Our camp included a day trip to Rathlin Island.

2006 Camping du Ried, Strasbourg

In 2006 our camp included members from across the Coleraine and District Battalion. As well as the traditional camp activities of watersports, games and sightseeing we were also able to attend the 2006 World Cup 3/4 play-off in Stuttgart, Germany.

2005 Strathclyde Country Park, Glasgow

Our 2005 camp was at Strathclyde Country Park, home to the famous M&D's Themepark. Other activities included watersports, orienteering, swimming, bowling, and much more.

2004 - L'international de Jablines, Paris

We travelled to Paris for our 2004 company camp. Activities included a day-trip to Paris to sight-see, a day at Disney Studios and Park, minigolf, watersports, and much more.

2003 - Shepherd's Lodge, Newcastle

In 2003 we had our company camp at the BB's Shepherd's Lodge facility in Newcastle, County Down. Activities included orienteering, ropes course, zip-line, swimming, canoeing and more.

2002 - The Queen's Golden Jubilee, London

In 2002 our Company was invited to attend the official celebrations for The Queen's Golden Jubilee. Seven boys from the company joined boys from throughout the United Kingdom to take part in the Queen's Jubilee Parade on the 4 June. The same year our company celebrated its Centenary Year.

The Boys' Brigade

The Boys' Brigade is an international non-denominational uniformed Christian youth organisation. 1st Kilrea Company is part of the Coleraine & District Battalion of the Northern Ireland District which itself is a district of the Boys' Brigade United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.

Object

The Object of the Boys' Brigade is the advancement of Christ's Kingdom among boys and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-Respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness.

Emblem & Motto

Our emblem is an anchor placed over a Greek Cross with the motto "Sure and Steadfast". Both the symbol and motto come from Hebrews, Chapter 6, Verse 19: 'Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast'.

History

The first Boys' Brigade company was set up by Sir (then still Mr.) William Alexander Smith on 4 October 1883 at Free Church Mission Hall, North Woodside Road, Glasgow, Scotland to develop 'Christian manliness' by the use of a semi-military discipline and order, gymnastics, summer camps and religious services and classes.

In the years following the establishment of the 1st Glasgow company, others were rapidly formed throughout Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom leading to a movement comprising thousands of boys: in the early 20th century there were about 2200 companies connected with different churches throughout the United Kingdom, the British empire and the United States, with 10,000 officers and 100,000 boys. Each company is normally connected to a Battalion encompassing several nearby companies, which in turn are organised at a district and then national level.
